Choosing the Right Walking Stick
Match the stick type to your balance needs, grip strength, and daily lifestyle.
Base Stability
Single-point sticks suit mild balance needs; four-point quad bases provide freestanding maximum support.
Handle Style
T-handle, derby, crook, or anatomically moulded grips to suit your hand strength and arthritis condition.
Portability
Folding models pack neatly into travel bags; rigid telescopic sticks provide maximum day-in day-out sturdiness.
Weight Rating
Standard aluminium sticks support up to 100 kg; heavy-duty bariatric builds accommodate higher weight limits.
Proper Sizing & Walking Technique
Following NHS and clinical physiotherapy guidelines for safe and effective mobility support.
Stand in Your Normal Shoes
Wear your everyday walking shoes and stand upright with arms relaxed at your sides.
Measure to the Wrist Crease
The top of the stick handle should align with the crease on the inside of your wrist.
Check Elbow Bend Angle
When holding the handle, your elbow should bend comfortably at approximately 15–20 degrees.
Walk on the Opposite Side
Hold the stick on your unaffected side so it moves simultaneously with your weaker leg.
MAINTENANCE & SAFETY
5-Point Safety Inspection Checklist
Perform these quick checks weekly to ensure your walking stick remains fully secure and slip-resistant.
1. Inspect Rubber Ferrule
Check bottom tread for smoothing, cracks, or embedded gravel. Replace immediately if tread is worn.
2. Verify Push-Pin Engagement
Ensure the brass locking button clicks completely through the adjustment hole before putting weight.
3. Tighten Anti-Rattle Collar
Finger-tighten the threaded compression nut below the adjustment pin to eliminate shaft play.
4. Check Handle Attachment
Ensure the grip does not twist, wobble, or pull away from the shaft under downward pressure.
5. Inspect Shaft for Bends
Check the aluminium tube for dents or hairline bends, particularly if the stick was ever trapped in a door or vehicle.

Inspect the rubber tip every few weeks. If the tread pattern is worn smooth, the rubber is cracked, or the internal metal washer becomes visible, replace it immediately to avoid slipping.
A quad stick offers more stability, wider weight distribution, and stands upright on its own. However, it is slightly heavier and bulkier on stairs. A standard single-point stick is lighter and more maneuverable.
Yes. AARAM folding sticks use heavy-duty aircraft aluminium sections and reinforced internal shock cords with secure joints, making them as sturdy as rigid sticks when fully assembled.
